Buy Dog Toys
Puppies and Dogs need their own special toys to provide them with comfort and
stimulation and a sense of having their own possessions. Toys need to be chosen carefully to ensure they do no harm
to your dog. For example, cuddly toys should not be given to puppies, especially FlatCoated
Retrievers who are very oral and like to chew. The stitching can be ripped easily and the puppy
or dog will enjoy eating the stuffing, which will do their digestive system no good.
If you
do have a dog or puppy that is chewing furniture and things it really should not you could
try it with some more appropriate dog toys and chews.
Some are specially scented or flavoured which your dog will love - and should keep it out
of mischief!
It is worth buying your dog's balls, frisbees and other toys from specialist dog shops
as these products will be more durable and are made to withstand the rigours of dog teeth.
A useful dog toy to keep your pet entertained and educated is the food cube which help to stop boredom and provide your dog with tasty snacks as they play. It simply gets pre-filled by the dog owner and given to the dog. It is particularly useful for keeping dogs out of mischief whilst having to be left alone. Other variations of these dog toys include the pet pyramid, kong dog toys, dog smart, dog tornado, dog twister and dog spinny.
Squeaky rubber toys are great for smaller dogs and puppies but I am afraid they will not
last long with a FlatCoat! It will be destroyed quickly enough and the small plastic squeaker
can pose a danger if swallowed.
A solid rubber tug is great fun for you and your dog to pay a safe game of tug of war.

Other dog toys include a tug off war type toy which are generally made with colourful rope or similar tough material. In her book It's Me or the Dog: How to Have the Perfect Pet
Victoria Stilwell considers tug of war dog toy playing to be a great bonding experience between owner and dog. Though she advises to beware of over stimulating the dog which can lead to aggression and guarding of dog toys.
In such cases play should immediately stop and ownership of the tug of war dog toy return to the owner.
