Dog Ear Care: Dogs with long ears, like Flatcoated Retrievers, may be prone to ear mites. There are a few things you can do to prevent this:

It's Me or the Dog: How to Have the Perfect Pet has sections about dog ears, body language and communication. For example Victoria Stilwell states that a dog with ears that stick up straight is alert, confident and aware whilst a nervous dog will have drawn back ears.
The external ear of the dog is called the pinna. The dog ear has 17 muscles.
The hearing range for the average dog is from frequencies 200 to 15,000Hz.
Dog ear care is particularly important with floppy ear dogs such as the Flat Coated Retriever because ear wax cannot move up and out of a floppy ear as it would with an erect ear in a dog such as a germen Shepherd. Blocked wax can lead to hearing difficulties, balance problems, pain and infection.
The pricking of a dog's ear movement is called the Preyer's reflex.
The longest dog ears belong to Harbor who lives in America. This black and tan coonhound has a right ear that measures 12.25 inches long and his left ear is 13.5 inches long. These longest dog ears made it into the 2012 Guinness World Records.
