CAUSES OF EPILEPSY IN DOGS

Around 1% of dogs who suffer with epilepsy have no identifiable cause. The most common causes of epilepsy in dogs are following trauma or injury to the head and brain disease.

TYPES OF EPILEPSY IN DOGS AND SYMPTOMS

Generalised - This is the most common type of epilepsy in dogs and usually involves total loss of consciousness and the dog may become urinary or faecally incontinent. The dog makes crying like noises and has muscle spasm limb movements.

Focal - Can also be called partial seizures because they originate in a specific area of the dog's brain and affect the area that the brain controls.

Psychomotor - This epilepsy in dogs causes unusual or aggressive behaviour in a dog due to hallucinations.

Whilst my four legged companion sat beside me I wrote a book which tells the story of The Grey Lady Ghost of the Cambridge Military Hospital which reveals her origins in the QAIMNS and where she meets a QA veteran of Afghanistan. She still walks her wards and tells her story by taking Scott Grey, a QARANC nurse, to the battlefields of World War One and beyond. This is the first in the series of Grey and Scarlet Novels by CG Buswell. Read the first chapter for free.

TREATMENT OF EPILEPSY IN DOGS

Early examination and treatment by a vet is recommended if you suspect epilepsy in dogs.

Most treatments centre around anti-epileptic drugs to reduce the number of fits a dog will experience. The vet will want to monitor the dog and the levels of drug in its system through regular blood testing.

Most dogs can cope with epilepsy and go on to lead fulfilling lives, however dogs who are affected by aggressive behaviour may have to be put to sleep for the safety of others and to prevent its further suffering.
