Hip Dysplasia

Hip Dysplasia in Flat Coated Retrievers and other dogs - what Hip Dysplasia is, the effects of Hip Dysplasia, the prevention and treatment of Hip Dysplasia in dogs:

WHAT IS HIP DYSPLASIA

Dog Hip Dysplasia is a badly worn or incorrectly formed hip joint where the round bone of the femur does not fit properly into the socket bone of the hip. It is more common in large dog breeds, such as the Flat Coated Retriever.

EFFECTS OF HIP DYSPLASIA

Due to the grinding effect of the bones, a dog with hip dysplasia will be in pain, worsened when walking. Affected dogs may be unable to perform their working duties due to the pain.

DIAGNOSIS OF HIP DYSPLASIA

Hip dysplasia can only be diagnosed by x-ray, though it may be detected as a dog become progressively immobile or reluctant to walk.

Hip dysplasia is a hereditary disease and this is why when you buy a puppy/dog you should ask to see certificates of clearance for both the mother and father dogs.

The Drummer Boy
Whilst my four legged companion sat beside me I wrote a book which tells the story of The Drummer Boy. This novel is about the ghost of a Gordon Highlander Drummer Boy from the Battle of Waterloo who haunts a modern day army nurse.

Chapters take place in modern day Aberdeen, at the Noose & Monkey bar and restaurant as well as His Majesty’s Theatre and Garthdee. Other scenes take place at Tidworth and during the Napoleonic War.

TREATMENT OF HIP DYSPLASIA

The only treatment is through surgery - removing the pectineus muscle, the round bone of the femur, reconstruction of the femur and artificial replacement of the hip.

Some dogs may see an improvement with a combination of gentle controlled exercise, anti-inflammatory and pain-relieving drugs. One such treatment is hydrotherapy which is explained in greater detail on the Signs of Arthritis in Dogs page.
