Signs of Pain in Dogs
Pain is nature's way of making the body rest in order to prevent further injury and to
allow healing to take place. Though if left untreated it may cause stress and exhaustion,
which will delay the healing process. Recognising signs of pain in your dog is important
so that injuries and illnesses may be treated and appropriate veterinary assistance sought:
Breathing: Excessive panting or rapid, shallow breathing may indicate
pain.
Change in Behaviour: Pain may cause your dog to become subdued or become abnormally
frantic and restless.
Some dogs in pain may become snappy and aggressive. Shielding of certain areas of the
body may be seen when petting your dog. A normally active dog may become lethargic and not
so enthusiastic about his or her daily walk, play or groom. Lameness, limps or sitting
awkwardly can also be signs of pain. The dog may lick, scratch or bite the painful area.
Eyes: The eyes of a dog in pain may appear wide and glassy.
Inappropriate Noises: A dog in pain may whimper, snarl or cry out.
Loss of Appetite: Most dogs are motivated by food, so a dog that shows little
or no interest in their meals may be in pain. If your dog avoids harder and crunchier food,
it may have tooth or gum pain. A general loss of appetite may be due to pain elsewhere.
If your dog has signs of pain and/or abnormal lumps, bumps and scratches then they
should be examined by a vet. Never be tempted to administer human painkillers.
