Demodectic Mange in dogs is a skin disease caused by an infestation of the parasitic demodex mite. The mange mite is too small to be seen without the use of a microscope and causes a condition often called demodecosis.

SIGNS OF MANGE

Mange can appear in a localised area, or generally over the coat of a dog or puppy. Hairless patches on the legs and face are most common mange signs. These bald patches are caused by the parasite that lives on the dog's hair follicles burrowing into the sebaceous glands.

TREATMENT OF MANGE

Many cases of mange in dogs will clear up themselves depending on the state of the dog's or puppy's immune system, general health and diet. Treatment of dog mange varies and can be difficult at times due to the mites living so deep in the dog that washes can be ineffective. However, this can be overcome by clipping the dog so that medicated washes have an opportunity to penetrate the skin.

As with any dog health problems if you suspect mange signs early advice and examination by your dog's vet is recommended.
